TEST WORLD
       Test World's Traction Truck
Not only is Test World the first European provider to offer ASTM 1805 testing, but its Traction Truck is also the world’s first all-electric iteration of such a test vehicle. The electric powertrain set-up is suited to manufacturers looking to test their tyres
in a more environmentally friendly way, and in-line with shifting market trends. The electric drive truck also provides
more test options over the traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, as it is easier to fine-tune the test parameters for different tyre sizes.
“Customers no longer need to send their tyres to the USA if they wish to test to
the ASTM 1805 standard, and, thanks to Test World’s indoor facilities, it is the only venue globally that can provide year-round testing,” Antila says.
“Using and electric vehicle helps us to control the test better. We are excited to be working with customers on ASTM spin traction and ice grip testing, all whilst ensuring our facility is as safe and sustainable as possible.”
Antila explains that Test World had been developing the Traction Truck, which is based on a Toyota Hilux, for about two and a half years. “There are not many original parts left – just the body,” he says. “It has been fully rebuilt and is now a fully electric test unit including two motors for measuring and sensoring.”
Currently the Traction Truck is
being used by the Test World team for ice grip testing for the revised European tyre labelling regulation. The new ice grip symbol helps manufacturers to determine the suitability of their tyres in different, more extreme winter conditions.
